On April 25, 1913, the City of San Marino was incorporated, taking the name from James Shorb's San Marino Rancho. This name came from the original Shorb estate in Frederick County, Maryland. His grandfather, John Shorb, is said to have given the name "San Marino" to his estate because it had the same acreage as the Republic of San Marino near Italy's Adriatic shore. San Marino is located in Southern California, adjacent to the City of Pasadena at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. 3.75 square miles in size, the population was reported to be 12,988 in 1990. The climate is temperate with temperatures ranging from an average of 40 F during the winter months to an average of 90o F in the summer. Average relative humidity is 15% with a total average precipitation of 19 inches. Frost and snowfall are negligible. The San Marino Unified School District includes Carver and Valentine Elementary Schools, Huntington Middle School and San Marino High School, each a recipient of the California Distinguished School Award. Test scores at all grade levels consistently rank among the highest in the state.
